Hot Hump Day Excerpt: Layers Deep by Lacey Silks

Thanks to Lacey for this smokin' excerpt. Read on and enjoy! ;)
Excerpt
My feet pressed to the floor as the elevator lifted against gravity. Tristan turned, facing me. His sultry stare bore through my body, and I felt my back press against the mirrored wall.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this. He wasn’t supposed to hold power over me; no man ever had. I was a cop. A strong cop who wasn’t swayed by crying mothers, cute puppies, or gorgeous hunks speeding in their Ferraris, offering everything they owned and more. But I was also a woman – and to Tristan, my body responded of its own accord. I felt my breasts swell and I wished I’d worn a dress with a larger top: one that could hold the twins in better. Tristan didn’t seem to mind.
“So, what will two thousand dollars buy me, sweetheart?”
Even if we were playing, I had a feeling this was going to be one hell of an interview—one of the best ones I’d ever had.
“Whatever you want.” I wondered how far he’d go, and how far I’d allow him to go. I already knew what he wanted. My instincts were solid, especially the hormonal ones. My body had secretly ached for his touch since he’d walked into the auditorium. And that one deep kiss we’d shared in his car was like a teasing spoonful of chocolate cake. I craved chocolate cake; and not just a bite.
And before I could say another word, Tristan crushed his mouth to mine, possessing it like he owned me, spreading my lips apart with his needy tongue. The hint of scotch still lingered in his mouth. And at this moment, he did own me. Every. Single. Piece of me.
His grip on my wrists above my head would have normally enraged me. But tonight I wasn’t a cop, and his strong and demanding fingers wrapped around my hands like cuffs, burning me with a long-forgotten yearning.
The force of his lips devoured mine, his tongue exploring my mouth. The few moans that escaped me, Tristan swallowed. I had no room to breathe and found hardly enough strength to stand on my legs.
He let go of my mouth and trailed his lips along my jaw to my cheek and ear before lowering down my neck, pinning me against the wall. Oh, God, he felt so good against my body. Everything inside me twisted and tightened and released in unbearable pulses between my thighs. I breathed him in, the oak smell of his scotch imprinted in his skin and in his hair.
The elevator halted and Tristan jolted up as if he’d just realized what he’d done. He searched my eyes with his as if asking permission to go on. And for the first time tonight, doubt crept in. He leaned his forehead against mine.
“We can’t do this. I’m your employee,” I whispered into his mouth. But inside, I laughed at my own unconvincing words, feeling the heat between my legs penetrate my dampened panties.
The open elevator door chimed the second time.
“Your body says we can.” He cupped my engorged breasts, one in each hand, squeezing them in slow motion, feeling their full weight.
I held my breath, pushing my chest into his palms, filling them.
He looked straight into my eyes. “And you’re not hired until the morning.”

Saturday Storyteller Interview: Lacey Silks

Please welcome Lacey to our blog today. She's sharing her new release and telling us what she finds sexy!
What’s your name and where do you come from?
My name is Lacey Silks. I’m having the urge to reply that I come from Earth, but I’m guessing I wouldn’t be the first one ;) I actually live in a small town of Cambridge, Ontario and I find it’s the perfect place to raise our kids. We know all our neighbours and their kids on a first name basis and have an annual BBQ party in August. I don’t think I will ever move from here.
Tell us a bit about your latest release.
Layers Deep is book one in the Layers Trilogy. It steamed from a prequel which is already available “Dazzled by Silver”. Allie Green is a rookie cop who is hired by Tristan Cross (owner of top notch investigations and securities firm) to rescue a kidnapped ‘friend’. Sparks fly the moment she meets him and Allie has a difficult time keeping their relationship professional. Both have secrets and ghosts from the past haunting them, but they also have more in common than they’d thought. Allie and Tristan mesh very well together and realize how much they need each other very quickly.
How do you go about creating the perfect "Swoon" worthy man?
I search through a lot of internet photos. Of course they always have to be pretty fit and comfortable with their bodies, but I also like to add little imperfections that make them sexier. Like Tristan for example, he has a scar on his upper lip that lifts when he grins or smiles. I find that very attractive.
Do you have a favourite character from your books? Why are they your favourite?
From the Layers Trilogy, Tristan’s little sister stole my heart. Her character was so easy to write. I knew exactly who she was: a quirky, smart and adorable little teen. Her mouth never shuts and she speaks her mind. I adore her and wish she was my little sister.
What’s the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for you?
I’d have to say it was my husband who proposed in the same cafe where we went on our first date. It was a big surprise because we’d revisited the place a few times a year, so I didn’t suspect it.
What do you do to unwind and relax?
As cliché as that sounds, I read. I love being taken into a different world and lose myself in someone else’s life.
What’s your greatest weakness?
Chocolate and fresh pastries. I wouldn’t sell my first born for them, but having that sweetness melt on my tongue or the fresh dough fill me comes pretty close to being orgasmic.
Is the stuff you write about from experience or mostly imagination?
Some has to be from experience. Anything you write from your own life just sounds so much more believable and it’s much easier to write. Sometimes I actually have to get my hubby to try out a position to see if it actually works and to know where all the limbs go. I’ve had a situation where I argued with my editor whether something works. She tried it and couldn’t do it. I tried it and I could.  I had to change the scene around to make sure my readers wouldn’t say “That’s impossible”.
What’s your idea of a perfect romantic evening?
It would have to be at home, no kids, dinner and a movie with hubby and maybe a bubble bath afterwards. I love spending quiet quality time at home, laughing and losing ourselves in a conversation about anything.
Tell us something that might surprise our readers.

I’m more prudish in life than many people think. While I love beautiful lingerie I save it for special nights. Otherwise I sleep in a t-shirt.

Thumbs Up Thursday: Dancing on Air by Nicole Hurley-Moore

I love Victorian romances and they're a fairly rare breed so I was excited to read this. And I'll admit it, I was completely suckered in by the lush cover.

Thankfully that's what this book delivered. A lush, full story with twists and turns and likeable characters. While this is definitely a sweet romance (the love scene was steamy but definitely romantic and felt very suited to the story of Evander and Lisette), I would actually say that the romance isn't the strongest thread to this book. The courtship between the slightly rakish Evander and the sweet and loyal Lisette takes it time and blossoms slowly. There is a certain amount of love/lust at first sight, but neither go down the route of falling in love instantly. This slow build is refreshing.

Interestingly, the fact that their love isn't the only focus of the book is what gives it such a strong, enveloping feel. With a cast of two villains, some loyal friends and the rest of the ballet corp, you feel completely immersed in the world of the Victorian ballet and are willing Lisette and Evander to defeat the bad guys and the rules of society at the time, so they can find their happy ending. I knew it was coming--prayed for it to happen--but I'll admit, there was a few times I felt sure it was all going to come crumbling down. In spite of the sweet nature of this story, both villeins are twisted and cruel and add a real element of threat.

For an absorbing, rich, fantastically historical setting with a fresh feel to it, I highly recommend this book.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cinderella meets Swan Lake in this Victorian-era set story about a ballet dancer, an aristocrat, and their class-crossing romance...
Lisette yearns for freedom, security and love, but none are offered on the run-down stage of The Imperial Theatre. Instead she has hard work, a tyrannical aunt, and the hope of one day becoming a prima ballerina. Dancing on the stage she catches the attention of two powerful men: Lord Gainsworth and Lord De Vale.
Lord Evander Gainswith never expected to fall in love, let alone with a woman so wholly unacceptable to his family and his peers. The sinister Lord De Vale covets Lisette's youth and strength, and is willing to pay well for it. Lisette may dance roles in fairy tales and fantasies, but the real world is about to intrude, bringing with it the harsh realities of life for a young girl with dreams of rising above the demimonde.
BOOK EXCERPT
“Anything else I can do?”
Emma looked around the barn. To her regret, she couldn’t think of a single thing. Except, kiss me. She slowly shook her head. “No.”
“Well, I guess I’ll be going.”
His tone sounded reluctant. It must have been her imagination.
She raised her eyes, his emerald gaze ensnaring her. He suddenly seemed to be standing much closer to her.
“You’ve got a smudge.” His thumb caressed her cheek.
She couldn’t help the husky tone in her voice. “Is…is it gone?”
“Let me see.” His eyes gleamed with desire as he bent his head toward hers. “All gone," he murmured. “Except for here.”
His lips brushed hers. Excitement rippled through her as he deepened the kiss, claiming her mouth. His strong, capable arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her even closer. She surrendered to the kiss, her hands clasping his shoulders as he explored the secrets of her mouth. Her legs wobbled, making her grateful he held her so securely.
Saturday Storyteller Interview: Shona Husk
Please welcome our Saturday storyteller, Shona. She's talking about her upcoming release and getting romantic!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What’s your name and where do you come from?
Shona Husk and I live in Perth, Australia.
Tell us a bit about your latest release.
Lord of the Hunt was released on January 7 and it’s the second book in my Annwyn series (book 1 was The Outcast Prince). Set between our world and the fairy world of Annwyn the series centers around the dying King and the failing magic. Each book has its own hero and heroine. In Lord of the Hunt the hero and heroine discover just how treacherous the Court can be even for those with power. Digging into the fairies schemes and power plays was a lot of fun!
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Everywhere. Pictures, newspaper articles, mythology or even random conversations.
The Annwyn series was inspired by a discussion on mazes, and what they could be made of, with my kids. They thought a maze couldn’t be made of glass…I immediately imagined a place where you could see what you wanted but had to follow a complicated set of rules to get it—the fairy Court of Annwyn was born.
How do you go about creating the perfect "Swoon" worthy man?
Firstly the heroine has to find him attractive, as it’s through her the reader finds the hero attractive.
Since first impressions count he has to look the part. For some heroes this might mean a suit and tie, for others jeans. Verden the hero of Lord of the Hunt is very pretty like all fairies, but Taryn notices that he doesn’t dress as flashy as the rest; he doesn’t quite fit what she expects for a man of his rank.
Interest and intrigue are very important ingredients. The hero has to be someone the heroine (and the reader) wants to spend time with. Curiosity has to be aroused…
Add a dash of humor, a good heart and a killer smile and the hero is on his way to being swoon worthy:)
What do you do to unwind and relax?
I like to run (something I never thought I’d say but after taking up running 18 months ago I’ve come to enjoy it), read, do cross stitch while I watch TV.
What’s your greatest weakness?
Dark chocolate. I love it and I eat far too much of it….thus the running.
How do you decide how hot or not your book is going to be?
I’m not sure. Good question :) Ideas usually bounce around my mind for quite a while before I start plotting or writing, so by the time I put something to paper the idea is reasonably well formed and I know if it’s scorching or sensual. When it comes to the actual love scenes I go with whatever happens as by that time I know the characters and how far they’d go, or wouldn’t go. Sometimes they manage to surprise me though ;)
What’s your idea of a perfect romantic evening?
Good food, good wine and my hubby.
What do you do to get in the mood for writing love scenes? Candles, music etc?
I don’t do anything special I just write.
Sometimes it’s really easy and the words flow, other times its hard work. If I really can’t get in the rhythm I make a couple of dot points about what the characters learn or how they change and I jump to the next scene. I usually go back the next day and fill in the gap.

LORD OF THE HUNT BY SHONA HUSK – IN STORES JANUARY 2014

She Wasn’t Cut Out for His World...
The realm of the fairies might be unbelievably beautiful, but its people are notoriously treacherous. Raised among mortals, Taryn hoped to avoid her fairy heritage her whole life. But now she must cross over to Annwyn and appeal to the King to pardon her exiled parents, or they're sure to die. And to get to the King, she'll first have to face the Lord of the Hunt...

He Can't Imagine Life Without Her...
Verden, Lord of the Hunt, is sworn to serve to King. But the moment he sees Taryn, the attraction is instant and devastating. How can he not help the beautiful, brave young woman who refuses to bend to the will of the court? Yet the power in Annwyn is shifting, its magic failing. No matter how much he may love Taryn, the Hunter knows that abandoning his duty could bring down the mortal world forever...

Praise for the works of Shona Husk:

Hot Hump Day Excerpt - Saved by a Rake.

Today we have our very own Em Taylor and her newly released Regency romance, Saved by a Rake.

Daniel looked up from the letter he was just finishing. He was sitting in the library the next evening after dinner. Rebecca had asked if she may join him so she could begin to read the book he had offered.
Simon and Andrew had taken a carriage into the village so Simon could show Andrew the sights. As far as Daniel knew, Drumbane had no sights apart from the church and the inn and he doubted very much that either man was interested in the church.
Had he done the right thing in offering the book to her? He was sure he had, even though he was sure the Countess of Chapelbrooke would have his hide for introducing her daughter to such literature.
He contemplated the wisdom of the venture again as his gaze roved over his wife. She was wearing a pretty white dress with pink flowers embroidered around the neckline, cuffs and hem. She had allowed her slippers to fall off, and one stockinged foot dangled from the large leather seat, while the other was tucked under her. Her eyes were wide as she scanned the pages, and she rocked herself against her foot, completely subconsciously.
He was enthralled watching her and his body seemed to have followed his mind. He moved quietly to turn the lock in the door. He did not want any servants happening upon what he hoped was going to now occur.
Taking the leather seat on the opposite side of the fire, he watched her as she turned a page and bit her lip. Good God, she was rocking as if she were astride him. His breath hitched as he noticed the flush of her skin and the way her free hand grasped her skirts. Her arousal fuelled his.
He pushed a hand inside the flap of his placket and tweaked open the buttons, leaving the buttons holding the flap in place, in case she was not as receptive to his advances as he hoped. Luckily he had shed his coat an hour or so before and it hung on the back of his desk chair.
“Are you enjoying the book?” he asked, aware that his voice was lower and gruffer than normal.
She looked up, obviously surprised to see he had moved. Her cheeks reddened, and he stifled a groan.
“Oh! I am…well…it is… that is… there is much to be learned from it.”
“Indeed.”
“She describes coupling very well, and if I were not already married, I fear I would be too eager to try being bedded after reading this.”
“Hmm, it is fortuitous indeed then that I made an honest woman of you before you read the book. And how do you feel as you read it?"
She placed her hand on her cheek and dropped her gaze back to the page, looking coy and seductive at the same time.
“I feel aroused—the way I feel when we are in bed.”
He smiled triumphantly. “I feel aroused watching you read it."
“You do?”
He nodded, beckoning her over. Without hesitation, she uncurled her leg, stood up, placing the book on the table beside her, and walked over to him. He moved forwards on the seat. It was large and wide. Easily big enough for what he intended.
Holding her gaze, to look for any signs that she was going to flee again, he began to lift her skirts. She tilted her head and ran her fingers through his hair. As he drew the skirts past their knees, she shuffled forwards, pulling his face against her bosom. He pursed his lips, kissing any skin they could reach as he was pressed against the swell of her bosom.
With one hand he flicked open the flap buttons of his breeches, while holding her gown out of the way with the other. He sprang free of his clothing and quickly stroked himself, urging her closer. She placed her knee onto the seat at his side.“Oh God, yes,” he growled into the flesh at the rise of her breast. Again he urged her forwards, and she straddled him. He moved the hand between them to test her flesh. She was ready.
He pushed his head back and her lips were on his in a flash. Her tongue probed at his lips for moments before he opened his mouth and welcomed her inside. No sooner had the sensations of the kiss begun to assail his mind, but she was lowering herself onto him and the fire, fully stoked, burst to life. He clutched her skirts in his hand, hoping to retain some control as she sheathed him fully, but when she started to move up and down, he was lost.
Their coupling was frantic, with Rebecca just as lost in the moment as he. As soon as he realised she was not going to take fright, he allowed himself to let go. He held her bare behind, urging her into the correct rhythm and what followed was a mess of growled endearments, thrusting hips, grabbed clothing and hair, sloppy kisses and a climax that almost caused him to lose consciousness.They collapsed backwards on the chair, still joined, both gasping for breath, clinging to each other as if they were drowning.
As he returned to his senses he was loathe to move. She lay in his arms, sated and trusting. She had never looked more beautiful than she did in this moment. Relief washed over him. The incident a few days ago had been a small bump in the road, and he wondered if she would continue to try to convince him to take a mistress every time she felt her confidence wane. She probably would, and he smiled to himself knowing that, with a little patience she could convince her back into his arms whenever she took fright.
“It is a very good book, I think,” said Rebecca eventually, lifting her head slightly and grinning at him.
“I believe it must be,” he replied, tightening his arms around her as she laid her head back on his chest.
Blurb

When Lady Rebecca Eversley is left ravished by the Earl of Newthorpe and facing ruination, she has the choice to point her pretty little nose in the air and face the gossips of the Ton or scurry off to the country to live out her life as an old maid. When she meets Lord Daniel Ramsey, a notorious rake, she decides on the former course of action.

Daniel has been given an ultimatum, marry before his father dies or lose the majority of his inheritance money. Rebecca seems the perfect candidate, especially once rumours about her start to circulate in the drawing rooms of Mayfair.

When Newthorpe is found dead on the morning of their wedding, the people they care about find themselves suspects in the case. Who murdered Newthorpe and can Rebecca ever get over what he did to her?
