Saturday Storyteller Interview: Pippa Jay

Please welcome Pippa as she talks about her latest release and how she ended up writing romance.
What’s your name and where do you come from?
My name is Pippa Jay, and I live in the historic town of Colchester in the UK.
Tell us a bit about your latest release.
Terms & Conditions Apply is a scifi romance short, set on a space station advertised as the perfect place for a romantic getaway, where an empathic AI fulfils your every dream and holographic suites arrange themselves to fit to any fantasy. Unfortunately my female MC is dumped by her boyfriend on arrival, and the AI is tested in solving that situation.
How do you go about creating the perfect "Swoon" worthy man?
I don’t know that I’ve created the perfect one…yet. But generally I start with the characteristics that I like most - nice eyes, a nice smile, a seductive voice - and I build on those things. I try to vary their look now because not everyone is going to like the same kind of man that I do.
What’s the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for you?
This will probably sound quite sad, but I’m a scifi geek so my husband buying me the complete collection of Doctor Who microfigures was my idea of most romantic. It means he knows exactly how to make me happy.
What trait do you find the sexiest?
I actually find a man being a little bit shy sexy.
How do you decide how hot or not your book is going to be?
Usually the story itself dictates that. Although for my first book I was asked to step it up, and for my short the submission call specified ‘hot’. The novella that I currently have out on submission needed to be on the hot side because of certain elements of the story.
Is there any erotic scenarios you wouldn’t write about?
I’ve no plans to write BDSM, and although I’m tentatively working on a ménage, it’s likely to be the only one. I also haven’t done any F/F or M/M (although the ménage is F/F/M).
Is the stuff you write about from experience or mostly imagination?
I take my personal experiences and expand on them, which sometimes requires a lot of imagination.
What’s your idea of a perfect romantic evening?
Just not having the kids screaming and shouting, and just curling up on the sofa with husband, lol!
Tell us something that might surprise our readers.
I fell into writing romance by mistake - I was writing scifi, then my characters pulled a fast one on me and totally changed the story.
About Pippa
A stay-at-home mum of three who spent twelve years working as an Analytical Chemist in a Metals and Minerals laboratory, Pippa Jay bases her stories on a lifetime addiction to science-fiction books and films. Somewhere along the line a touch of romance crept into her work and refused to leave. In between torturing her various characters, she spends the odd free moments trying to learn guitar, indulging in freestyle street dance and drinking high-caffeine coffee. Although happily settled in historical Colchester in the UK with her husband of 19 years, she continues to roam the rest of the Universe in her head.
Terms & Conditions Apply
“Welcome to Venus Ascendant, a Public Grade space station in the Andromedan Galaxy. With our open-to-all policy, any being in the universe can find their perfect R & R, romantic getaway or dangerous liaison at our purpose built resort. The on-board empathic AI Ganesa ensures that anyone coming to Venus Ascendant will find their heart’s desire, with suites that transform from luxurious boudoirs to sunset-lit beaches to dark BDSM dungeons. So come to Venus Ascendant and find exactly what you’re looking for!”

It was meant to be a romantic getaway for Marie and the love of her life Jaisen; a chance for him to get to know her better after months of her denying him more than a few stolen kisses. Instead, Marie finds herself dumped and alone on Venus Ascendant with no credit for a transmat and the next starship home not due for another hour.

But the all-seeing AI isn’t going to leave anyone aboard the space station with their dreams unfulfilled. Marie's boyfriend might not have made it to the station, but there are others willing and able to take on the role - even if they aren’t entirely human.

WARNING - Not suitable for under 18’s due to adult content.
